How to Read Different Painting

Art is a great status symbol in modern society and therefore can be quite intimidating to the casual observer. For many, the first impulse is to blow it up to see it as a useless toy for the rich and bored. It's a shame, not only because art can be a great joy in our lives, but also because even a passing knowledge of art can enrich and deepen our understanding of the world around us.

Fortunately, it is not that difficult to develop an informal understanding of art. It is true that some people study the smallest details of an artist's work throughout their lives, but it is not necessary to become an expert to have a meaningful relationship with art. All it takes is moderate attention to detail, a little patience, and a willingness to think about your own feelings.

Here, I'll show you a quick way to get up close and personal with a painting, although the ideas here can easily be applied to work in other media (sculpture, drawing, even architecture and fashion). There is no shortcut to understand what I can give. Great art rewards the hundredth view as much as the first time, and you can spend a lifetime reflecting on the choices an artist has made on a painting. Instead, I'll try to give you a process that will help you get the most out of a painting the first time you see it.

Since I'm on the subject, a few words on "great art". Andy Warhol said that if you want to tell a good painting from a bad one, first look at a thousand paintings. There are no hard and fast rules about what makes a room great, mediocre, or bad. Remember, Van Gogh's work was once considered amateurish and unforgettable. Of course, there are standards that matter in the professional art world, but you don't owe the pros anything, so don't worry about what they think is "awesome."

Art must please you first with your senses. That is not to say that a painting has to look good to be good, but it does have to stand out in some way. Give a job a moment to do its job; some jobs are intriguing in a subtle way. A work may capture your attention by its subject, its use of color, an interesting juxtaposition of objects, its realistic appearance, a visual joke, or a number of other factors.
