7 Mistakes Painting Contractors Make

As painters, we have all made these mistakes. My goal is to convince you to change only one or two of these habits and your business will improve considerably.
You may feel trapped in a cycle of poor production, inefficient sales, or bad employees, but I guarantee that almost all of your problems will lead to this list:

First mistake: focus on painting instead of developing your business.

When you're busy painting all day, when do you have time to market or grow your business? You do not have time. So it is important to leave the site and spend time where it is important. Sell and market your business.
If you paint all day, it's worth between $ 15 and $ 20 an hour. Instead, pay a painter $ 15 to $ 20 an hour to get replaced. Spending your time getting more jobs is exponentially more.
Instead of painting all day, he made 5 new offers and sold 3. His value will be much higher thanks to the benefits he will get from these three new jobs.
Or, instead of painting all day, he hired a door-to-door advertiser who got him 15 new leads that day.
Basically his hourly value is forever limited when he's busy painting. The usual counterargument I hear is: "I have to paint on the construction site because no one is doing their job and when I go everything goes to hell." Which brings us to the second mistake ...

Second mistake: don't waste time looking for good people.

If you talk to a painter long enough, you will inevitably listen; "There is no good help there." It's easy to hide behind this excuse, but it's not true. There are so many trustworthy painters, business owners just don't take the time to find them. It takes time to find good people, time you wouldn't have if you were busy painting.
In my first year of painting, I hired 15 teams and fired all but one. This happened for two reasons:
-I didn't hire the right people at first
-I did not handle people well when I found them
It's really important to spend time looking for the right people, as the old saying goes. "Adjust slowly, pull quickly." Then you must manage your teams well once you have found them. This means paying people on time, setting good expectations, and maintaining a consistent workflow.
If you do what you say and treat people with respect, people will work with you forever.

Third mistakegoing to the paint shop several times.

One day, at the beginning of my business, I went to the paint shop seven times. SEVEN times for the love of God. I spent most of the day in the paint shop. And if you've ever been to a paint shop, you know how slow the service can be.
In the second year of my business, I completely delegated visits to paint shops. My foreman took everything they needed. Color, materials, etc.

Fourth mistake: not following my marketing efforts correctly.

After finding some good equipment and freeing up my time, I tried different marketing techniques. Basically I did everything that is mentioned here.
My mistake was not to follow everyone's return. It turned out that some marketing methods worked much better than others. If I had followed this correctly, I would have spent my entire budget on the ones that worked and the ones that didn't.
Many painters subscribe to 5 different lead sources and do not control the effectiveness of each one. This opens the door to a bad appreciation of certain marketing channels. You should follow the marketing methods that work best and invest all of your money in them. Create a quick spreadsheet and track your expenses and results as follows:

Fifth mistake: doing small jobs just for money.

I swear that small jobs cause ALL problems. Usually these are the jobs you say to yourself: "It costs $ 300 anyway and it's pretty easy." But these are the jobs that can cause all headaches and eat all your time.
Sometimes clients with the smallest job (and smallest budget) are the most difficult. Once, I spent an entire week in 2 interior rooms because the customer did not like the color or finish after drying.
Spend your time getting good, profitable jobs. For example, you could have finished two complete outdoor spaces this week and made 15 times as much money.

Sixth mistake: it loads very little.

Many painters are forced to lower their prices to get the job. I myself competed with the undercuters.
What I discovered is that homeowners generally don't choose the lowest offer. In fact, they are often afraid of low supply. People obviously want to pay as little money as possible, but they also don't want a hacking job.
Instead of trying to reduce my profits, I was able to sell my value and quality better. Sometimes it was twice as expensive as the other offers they received, and I still won the job because they trusted me and my quality.
Respect your price (and yourself) and calculate what is correct. Load something that will give the owner a high-quality job, but also leave something for their efforts.

Seventh mistake: don't plan work in advance.

For the first two years of my painting business, I lived from salary to salary. I would quit a job, receive the check, pay all my bills, and hope to start the next job as soon as possible.
It is not a healthy and stress free way of life. Sometimes I had to delay payments to my people because I had no money. This puts your employees in a difficult position and creates financial despair. You'll soon start submitting low bids and doing less profitable jobs just to keep your teams busy.
To avoid this, plan the work in advance. Some painters think that an order is not valid because the client requests it 2 months later. In such cases, I would plan the job no matter what, even if it was 6 months. You take a deposit (mine was 20%) and can keep any date for the customer.

Final thoughts
Diverting your paint business from these mistakes can be difficult, but I guarantee it will be worth it. You will look at your business and say: "How did I work like this?" Once you start doing things more efficiently and reap the benefits, you can't go back to your old ways. Try to correct just two of these errors and see what happens!
